Teacher Candidacy Screening
Students are accepted to the University as Education majors, but progress beyond 48 credits may occur only upon application for Teacher Candidate status. Acceptance into Teacher Candidacy permits the student to engage in junior-level Education course work.
The following outline presents criteria for the teacher certification candidacy programs.
- Verification of at least 48 semester hours in order to meet PDE chapter 354.23 regulations.
- Verification of at least 3.00 GPA in Education, teaching area, and overall, with verification of “C” or above in education and teaching areas taken by the time of application.
- Clearances: Valid Criminal History Clearance (Act 34), Child Abuse Clearances (Act 151), and FBI Finger print Clearance Act (Act 114) indicating, “no record”, as well as TB test results. Any citation on the Act 34, Act 151 or Act 114 may result in unsuccessful screening.
- Passing scores on the PRAXIS Series I examinations. (PSST Reading, Writing, Mathematics)
- Completed recommendations from instructors.
- Satisifactory completion of a candidacy interview process.

- ENLT 140 - (CL) English Inquiry (or another ENLT course at the 120 level or higher)
- A 3-credit course in college-level English or American Literature
- Completed recommendations from instructors in the following courses:
- Any two Communication courses

- or
- 3-credit statistics elective
- Completed recommendations from instructors in the following courses:
- BIOL 141 - (E) General Biology or
- CHEM 112 or CHEM 113
- One lab course

Service commitment is 20 hours in Freshman Seminar with no service requirement in sophomore year.
1 For a second major in Biology, an additional 6.5 credits in Biology, CHEM 232L and CHEM 233L , PHYS 121 (with Lab), and 4 elective credits in Chemistry, Math or Physics are required.
2 Includes service-learning component.
3 Semesters may be reversed at the discretion of the department.

1 For a second major in Chemistry, the following are required: CHEM 330 , CHEM 390 and CHEM 440L .

Secondary Education (Citizenship with History) Curriculum
Service commitment is 20 hours in Freshman Seminar with no service requirement in sophomore year.
1 Includes service-learning component.
2 Humanities Electives: Students must earn 6 credits in Literature or Foreign Language with no more than 3 credits in Art or Music.
3 Students may substitute the Seminar with a 300- or 400-level course with permission of the History Department Chair.
4 Student Teaching semesters may be reversed at the discretion of the department.
Secondary Education (Citizenship with Political Science) Curriculum
Service commitment is 20 hours in Freshman Seminar with no service requirement in sophomore year.
1 Includes service-learning component.
2 Humanities Electives: Students must earn 6 credits in Literature, History or Foreign Language with no more than 3 credits in Art or Music.

2 Secondary Education/English majors will complete a second major in English. English majors at The University of Scranton are required to take at least four courses in British literature, and at least two in American literature. These appear above as “Area Requirements.” For further details, students should see English and Theatre Department and/or consult their English Department advisors.
3 Students who have not already done so must complete the English Department’s Theory Intensive Requirement.

2 Real Analysis I should be taken the fall of the junior year in odd-numbered years; Modern Algebra I should be taken in the fall of the junior year in even-numbered years.

Service learning commitment is 20 hours in Freshman Seminar with no service requirement in sophomore year.
1 Includes service learning component.
2 Spanish, French, German should be selected as a specialization within Modern Language (MLANG). Program results in a second major in the area of modern language chosen.
3 All Secondary Education MLANG Majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for a period of at least one semester. Students studying abroad should take EDUC 371 during intercession.
4 Before enrolling in EDUC 314 , students are required to pass a proficiency exam at the intermediate-high level.
5 Students whose specialization within Modern Language is Spanish are required to take SPAN 320 , and SPAN 321 and three of the following: SPAN 313 , SPAN 314 , SPAN 330 and/or SPAN 331 . In Spanish, there is no Advanced Stylistics II.
6 Students who begin their major language at the 311 level will take 6 fewer credits in the major and 6 more credits in the cognate or free area. In their second year, they will choose advanced language electives.
7 Semesters may be reversed at the discretion of the department.
