ARTH 222 - Impressionism and Post-Impressionism3 cr. Impressionism, an artistic movement linked today with leisure and pleasure, developed out of conflict and challenged many standard European art practices. The course investigates the artistic goals and strategies of Manet, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Morisot, Cassatt and Pissarro and considers how their works respond to important social issues of the day. Paintings by the Postimpressionists Cézanne, Seurat, Van Gogh and Gauguin will be examined as reactions to the aims of Impressionism.
