First Year Seminars (FYS) are a three-credit, required courses for all students that is regularly completed in their first year. The course seeks to welcome students into the academic community at Scranton; aid students in their academic transition; introduce a content area; start students on their way to careful thinking, writing, and speaking; establish a close relationship with a professor; and to familiarize students with the University’s Ignatian identity and mission. Seminars are offered on a wide variety of topics which can function as a course for their major, a general education course, or an elective. Classes are capped at 18 students to maximize interactions with professors and among students. As a part of the university’s Eloquential Perfecta level 1 courses, the minimum passing grade to fulfill the requirement is a C or better.
