ARTH 310 - (CA,W) Heaven, Hell, Apocalypse3 cr. This cross-disciplinary course studies visual depictions of Heaven and Hell in Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Egyptian, Ancient Near-Eastern and Greco-Roman cultures, 3000 BC-1600 AD. Apocalyptic imagery based upon the biblical Book of Revelation is studied in historic, artistic, and theological contexts; with literary texts (e.g. Epic of Gilgamesh, Book of the Dead, Aeneid, Divina Commedia) supplying thought and image to artists. A field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art is included.
