Board of Trustees


The Board of Trustees at The University of Scranton serves an institution that is founded in the Catholic, Jesuit tradition, committed to scholarship, community and service. The primary duties of the board include the oversight of the institution’s budget, the establishment of fundamental institutional policies, and the selection and appointment of the University’s president. The board also sets overall directions and institutional objectives for the University, among other responsibilities. Much of the board’s work is addressed via several standing committees; the overall structure of these committees is aligned with the four themes of the University’s strategic plan: Educational Excellence, Campus Community, Economic Strength and Civic Engagement.


William J. Brady ‘83

William Brady joined Mascoma as president and CEO in January 2010. Previously, Brady was executive vice president of Cabot Corporation, a specialty chemical company.  Throughout his 23-year experience, Brady held numerous positions at Cabot in the U.S. and in Japan, including general manager of the $2 billion Carbon Black business, which operates 23 manufacturing plants in 18 countries. Under his leadership, the business completed significant expansions in China and Brazil, and executed a major global initiative in energy efficiency. In addition, he led the commercialization of two start-up businesses at Cabot in ink jet colorants and elastomer composites. 

Brady currently serves on the board of directors of Mascoma and is chairman of the board of Mascoma’s affiliate, Frontier Renewable Resources, LLC.  In addition, he is chair of the Washington, D.C.-based Advanced Ethanol Council (AEC), which is accelerating the commercialization of advanced and cellulosic ethanol development, by establishing public policies and expanding the market for ethanol. Brady is also a member of the Board of Trustees at The University of Scranton. 

Brady is a graduate of The University of Scranton with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, and received his master’s degree in business administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

 

 


Christopher M. “Kip” Condron ‘70 – Chair

Christopher M. “Kip” Condron was elected president and chief executive officer of AXA Financial, Inc., and a member of the AXA Financial Group management Board in May 2001. In addition, Condron is chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of AXA Financial’s principal insurance subsidiary, AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company (formerly The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States).

Immediately prior to joining AXA Financial, Condron served both as president and chief operating officer of Mellon Financial Corporation and chairman and chief executive officer of The Dreyfus Corporation since 1995.

Condron joined The Boston Company in 1989 as vice chairman and head of the Private Client Group. He was named executive vice president of Mellon in 1993, when it acquired The Boston Company. Previously, he was co-president of AYCO Corporation, a subsidiary of American Express, which acquired his Pittsburgh-based financial planning firm, Condron Associates. He is a board member of AllianceBernstein Corporation, AXA Financial, Inc., KBW, Inc., and the Financial Services Roundtable. He is a director of The American Ireland Fund and ACLI (American Council of Life Insurers).

A native of Scranton, Condron is founding chairman of the President’s Business Council of The University of Scranton and previously served two terms on the University’s Board of Trustees.

  


Vincent M. Cooke, S.J.

Fr. Vincent Cooke, S.J., is province assistant for higher education for the New York Province of the Society of Jesus, and assistant for strategic planning for the New York, Maryland and New England Provinces of the Society of Jesus. A native of New York City, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University at Loyola Seminary, and Master of Arts in teaching history and philosophy from Fordham. He received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from Woodstock College, a Master of Sacred Theology from Yale University and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin (Madison). Fr. Cooke has also served as president of Canisius College in Buffalo N.Y.; academic and executive vice president at John Carroll University; professor of philosophy at Fordham University; provincial of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus; and vice provincial for higher education for the New York Province of the Society of Jesus.

 

 


Thomas J. Davis, C.P.A. ‘69

Thomas Davis, C.P.A., a proprietor of a financial advisory and consulting practice, earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from The University of Scranton in 1969. Upon graduation, he began working for a national accounting firm in New York, N.Y., and became a senior partner at Piaker & Lyons, P.C., a regional accounting firm in New York state. In 2004, Davis founded his own financial advisory and consulting practice in Binghamton, N.Y. He has served on the board of directors of several organizations, including the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce, of which he was past chairman; the Greater Binghamton Coalition; Lourdes Hospital; the Roberson Museum; and Endicott Interconnect Technologies, Inc. Davis is also a past president of the board of governors of The University of Scranton Alumni Society. He and his wife, Patricia, have two children.

 

 

 

 

 


 Jacquelyn Dionne ‘89

A native of Scranton and University of Scranton alumna, Jacquelyn (Rasieleski) Dionne became a registered nurse upon graduating from Community Medical Center School of Nursing and continued her education at The University of Scranton. She earned a bachelor’s degree in health administration from the University. Dionne’s career as an intensive care nurse included several certifications earned while at Mount Auburn, a Harvard teaching hospital, and later at the New Hampshire Heart Institute. Today, she is active in several charitable organizations and is an officer for the National Charity league. Dionne lives in Westport, Connecticut with her husband, John, and three children.

 

 

 

 


 Donna M. Doherty

Donna Doherty is the owner of Heart to Art, a design and marketing company dedicated to the building of better communities through collaborative intergenerational art experiences. She was recently chosen by the Broadway Theatre League of Northeastern Pennsylvania as the 2007 recipient of the Sam and June Cali Star Award for distinguished service and dedication to the arts. Doherty is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass. Following her graduation, she joined Kraft Foods as a sales representative and later worked for Waring and LaRosa, a New York advertising agency, and Great Waters of France/Perrier, Greenwich, Conn.

Doherty has served on the board of trustees of the Everhart Museum in Scranton, as Scranton coordinator for the Miles of Mules initiative of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, on Governor Rendell’s Arts and Cultural Transition team and on the Lackawanna County Council on Arts, Culture and Education and the Artspace Steering Committee. Doherty and her husband, Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty, reside in Scranton with their six children.

 

 

 


James F. Duffy, S.J., M.D. ‘88

Fr. James Duffy, S.J., M.D., is chaplain of Georgetown University School of Medicine and internist at the Spanish Catholic Center, Washington, D.C. A resident of Washington, D.C., he received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from The University of Scranton and a medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Since his ordination in 1996, he has earned a Master of Arts in healthcare ethics from Loyola University, Chicago, Ill., and a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, Calif. Fr. Duffy also served in the U.S. Navy as a medical officer, as a resident physician at Georgetown University Medical Center, and as an internist at Lifelong Medical Clinic in Berkeley. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

 

 

 

 

 


Mary Beth Farrell, C.P.A. ‘79

Through March 2010, Mary Beth Farrell, C.P.A., was executive vice president of AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company, a member of the company’s Executive Management Committee and vice chair of AXA Advisors, LLC, the company’s retail distribution channel. Farrell also headed the company’s Six Sigma program in the United States. Before joining AXA Equitable, she was senior vice president and controller at GreenPoint Financial/GreenPoint Bank. In 1987, Farrell joined Citicorp/Citibank, where she held several management positions. She began her career at KPMG Peat Marwick, where she advanced to audit senior manager. Farrell is chair of The University of Scranton President’s Business Council and served on the Board of Trustees from 2002 – 2009, including two years as vice chair (2007 – 2009). She was also a member of the Lincoln Center Corporate Board. Farrell graduated with honors from The University of Scranton, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

 

 

 

 


Matthew Geiger ‘81

Matthew Geiger has co-owned and served as treasurer of Response Environmental Inc., an environmental remediation and spill management company located in Worcester, Mass., since 1997. Previously, Geiger worked in various financial positions for several units of Air & Water Technologies Corporation, an engineering company. At Air & Water, Geiger served as the finance and administration manager for a wastewater system operations and management contract in Egypt. After earning a Bachelor of Science in accounting from The University of Scranton, he worked for Price Waterhouse for five years.

 

 

 


Marie A. George, Ph.D., G’78

Marie George, Ph.D., currently serves as president of Cabrini College, Radnor. Previously she served as executive vice president at Saint Anselm College, Manchester, N.H., where she was chief operating officer. She also was vice president of planning and institutional research at The University of Scranton, where she also served on the faculty and was chair of the Department of Health Administration and Human Resources. Prior to joining The University of Scranton, she held positions at King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, the Institute of Gerontology at College Misericordia, Dallas, and was corporate vice president of human resources at Mercy Health System, Wilkes-Barre.

 

 

 

 

 

 


Michael P. Glinsky, Jr. ‘66

Currently, a private investor, Michael Glinsky previously served as advisor and managing director of Glass Lewis & Company, an independent research company providing proxy advice and forensic accounting to institutional investors, from 2003 to 2007. Previously, he served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of NorthPoint Communications Group, Inc., and was formerly the executive vice president and chief financial officer of US WEST, Inc. He also served as managing partner of the Denver office of Coopers and Lybrand.

Glinsky is currently the president and CEO of the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home in Olyphant, which his family has owned and operated for more than 100 years.

He also serves as a member of the board of dDirectors, and on the audit committee, for Renal Ventures Management, Inc. He is on the board of trustees of Regis University, where he is chairman of the audit committee, a member of the executive committee and the facilities committee. He also serves as a board member on the Colorado Haiti Project.

Glinsky is a past board member of Commercial Federal Bank Corporation (Bank of the West) where he served as audit committee chairman, Member of the compensation committee and executive committee. He is also a past board member of the Santa Fe Opera and Colorado Symphony Orchestra.

 


 Otto H. Hentz, S.J.

Fr. Otto Hentz, S.J., an associate professor in the theology department at Georgetown University, has served in various positions at the Washington, D.C., university over the past five decades. In 1955 he entered the Society of Jesus, and later taught philosophy at Georgetown from 1962-1965. Fr. Hentz was ordained as a priest in 1968 and did his doctoral studies in theology at the University of Chicago. He returned to Georgetown in 1972 as a member of the department of theology. Fr. Hentz has served as an associate professor at Georgetown since 1978, teaching courses on the Catholic Church in the modern world, Christianity and Jesus Christ, and systematic theology.

 

 

 

 

 


Joseph J. Kadow, J.D. ‘78

Joseph Kadow, J.D., is executive vice president and chief legal officer at OSI Restaurant Partners, LLC, Tampa, Fla. He previously served as senior vice president and general counsel at OSI. Prior to joining OSI, Kadow was a partner in the Orlando, Fla., office of the national law firm Baker and Hostetler. He graduated from The University of Scranton with a Bachelor of Science in accounting and earned his Juris Doctor degree from the Dickinson School of Law.

 

 

 


James Knipper ‘81

James Knipper is president and CEO of J. Knipper and Company, a healthcare marketing solutions company that he founded in 1987. He earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from The University of Scranton in 1981, and a Master of Business Administration in the pharmaceutical sciences from Farleigh Dickinson University in 1984. He is a member of the board of trustees of Georgian Court University, a past member of the Alumni Board of Governors at The University of Scranton, and a member of the board of trustees of Oratory Prep, Summit, N.J., where he was named Alumnus of the Year for 2002. Knipper was recently instituted as an acolyte in preparation for his anticipated 2008 ordination as a deacon in the Diocese of Trenton, N.J. He resides in Princeton, N.J., with his wife, Teresa, a 1982 Scranton alumna, and their four sons.

 

 

 

 

 


 Lawrence Lynch, C.P.A. ‘81

Lawrence Lynch, C.P.A., is an audit partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, serving in the financial services sector. He most recently served as an elected member of the Alumni Society of The University of Scranton. He is a board member of the International Insurance Foundation and the Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart. Lynch previously served as chairman of the board of trustees for the Marymount International School in Paris, and as a board member of the French American Chamber of Commerce, Philadelphia chapter, and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Mental Retardation Services.

 

 

 


George V. Lynett, Jr.

George Lynett, Jr. has served as CEO of Times-Shamrock Communications since 2009. Previously, he was the publisher of The Towanda Daily & Sunday Review and president of the Towanda Printing Company, where he managed nine papers in Pennsylvania and New York for the Times-Shamrock Weekly Group. Having received a bachelor’s degree from the College of Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass., Lynett earned a diploma in business studies and industrial relations from the London School of Economics, London, England. He later received a master’s degree in business administration from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. Lynett served in the U.S. Navy, earning the Navy and Marine Corps’ Achievement Medal in 1998 and Commendation Medal in 2000.

 

 

 

 


Dennis McGonigle ‘82

Dennis McGonigle is chief financial officer (CFO) and Executive Vice President at SEI Investments. Prior to his appointment to CFO in 2002, he ran one of SEI’s operating segments. Previously, he served as head of product management, overseeing the product development and maintenance of products and services related to SEI’s investment management offering, as well as SEI’s fund services area. He also serves on the board of directors of a number of SEI’s subsidiaries. McGonigle began his career with SEI Investments as controller of the SEI mutual funds and SEI Financial Services, a subsidiary of SEI Investments.

Prior to joining SEI in 1985, he was a senior auditor with Arthur Andersen and Co. He is a 1982 graduate of The University of Scranton and a member of the Wharton Fellows program at the University of Pennsylvania. He resides in Chester Springs with his wife, Rachel, and their three daughters, Audrey, Alyson and Alena.

 

 

 

 


James F. Mullery, Jr. ‘86

Jim Mullery is president of Security Benefit Distribution where he oversees the firm’s distribution activities around the firm’s 403b Market, Bank, Defined Contribution and RIA and Fee-based Planner initiatives. He brings more than 22 years experience in establishing robust product platforms and distribution teams to his role. Mullery came to Security Benefit from AXA-Equitable where he most recently served as senior vice president and head of TSA/EDC distribution in the retirement savings business area. He previously served the firm in a variety of leadership roles, including president of AXA Global Sub-Advisory Group, AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company; chief operating officer, and chief sales officer for AXA Distributors. Prior to joining AXA, Mullery served as Senior Vice President, Director of Sales and Marketing for Mutual Funds, Retirement Plans, Separate Accounts, and Institutional Sales for Fred Alger and Company. Earlier in his financial services career, he worked for Prudential Mutual Funds, Lord Abbett and Company, Smith Barney, and Reserve Fund. Mullery earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Scranton, where he currently serves on the school’s Board of Trustees. He is also a member of the President’s Metropolitan Business Council for The University of Scranton, a group of New York-based alumni who support the University through targeted student recruitment, internships and mentoring. Mullery and his wife, Cheryl, have two daughters. They currently reside in Summit, N.J.

 

 

 


Justin Murphy ‘76

Justin Murphy currently serves as the senior law enforcement advisor and special assistant to the chief information officer of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). He is responsible for liaising with federal state, local and tribal law enforcement partners on topics such as technology advancement and adoption and security. He provides insight and recommendations on the department’s Law Enforcement Information Sharing Plan and its adoption throughout the nation. This includes an in-depth understanding of such programs as the FBI’s National Data Exchange (N-Dex), Sentinel, Next Generation Identification (NGI), and the Federal Law Enforcement Integrated Wireless Network, the replacement communication network for all of the DOJ’s Law Enforcement components. In addition, Murphy is the deputy executive director for the National Information Exchange Model, a partnership between the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The program is designed to develop, disseminate and support enterprise-wide information exchange standards.

Prior to his current position, he held a number of senior positions in the private sector for large system integrators, including vice president for Science Application International Corporation (SAIC), where he served as the company’s account executive for the DOJ and was responsible for mergers and acquisitions for the Integrated Security Solutions Business units of SAIC.

Murphy served 20 years in law enforcement and retired as a major from the Fairfax County Police Department, the largest municipal department in Virginia. During his tenure with the county he held command positions in all of the department’s bureaus.

Murphy is a 1976 graduate of The University of Scranton and received an executive master’s degree in 1993 from the University of Maryland. He is a graduate of the University of Louisville, Southern Police Institute, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.

He has lectured at international conferences for the Association of Public Safety Communications and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Murphy is married to Elizabeth Altemus ‘83 and they have one daughter.


Francis J. Pearn ‘83, Vice Chair

Frank Pearn is the chief financial officer of the Global Investment Banking and Sales division at J.P. Morgan based in New York City. The firm provides investment banking, sales, trading and research, private investment management, asset management, and private equity to corporations, governments and municipalities, institutional clients, and high net worth individuals worldwide. As CFO of Global Investment Banking and Sales, he is responsible for the effective financial and risk management of the mergers and acquisitions and capital markets origination businesses located in the major financial markets of the world.

Previously, he served as the chief financial officer of the Global Equities division at Barclays Capital, the investment banking subsidiary of Barclays Bank from 2006 to 2009. Prior to Barclays Capital he was the chief financial and operations officer for the Corporate and Investment Bank and Global Markets divisions of Banc of America Securities, a subsidiary of Bank of America from 2001 to February 2006.  

Before joining Banc of America Securities, he spent 10 years at J.P. Morgan in a number of financial management positions including three years as the controller and head of operations of the Milan, Italy, branch. His last role at J.P. Morgan was the chief financial officer of the Institutional Equities business and a member of the division’s Management Committee.

Pearn, a Certified Public Accountant, is a 1983 graduate of The University of Scranton and began his career with PriceWaterhouse in their New York office. He resides in Garden City, N.Y., with his wife, Suzanne, and their four children, Matthew, Stephen, Brian and Jordan. He is the vice chair of the Board of Trustees of The University of Scranton, where he serves as the chairman of the economic strength committee. He is also a member of the executive committee of the University’s $100 million Pride, Passion, Promise Capital Campaign.


Kevin P. Quinn, S.J.

The Reverend Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., J.D., Ph.D., began his service as the 25th president of The University of Scranton on July 1, 2011. An accomplished administrator, distinguished law professor and recognized scholar with a deep commitment to Catholic and Jesuit higher education, Father Quinn served as the executive director of the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education and as a professor of law at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., prior to becoming president at Scranton. Father Quinn earned a doctorate of philosophy in jurisprudence and social policy and juris doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley, where he served on the Board of Editors of the California Law Review. After law school, he served as law clerk for Judge Joseph M. McLaughlin, United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York City. He was admitted to the Bar of New York and the District of Columbia. Father Quinn earned an S.T.L. with a concentration in moral theology and a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley (now the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University). He is a summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Fordham University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and history.  He entered the Society of Jesus in 1973 and was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1985.

 

 

 


Vincent F. Reilly, J.D. ‘80

Vince Reilly, J.D., graduated from St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, class of 1976, The University of Scranton (B.S., 1980) and Villanova University School of Law (J.D., 1983.) He has been active in the civil litigation in the State and Federal Courts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey since 1983. On January 1, 2000, along with fellow University of Scranton Alumni Tracey McDevitt ‘93 founded the law firm of Reilly, Janiczek & McDevitt. The firm has 38 attorneys practicing in its Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware offices. He serves on advisory board of the Friends of St. Malachy, Inc., a non-profit corporation assisting St. Malachy Parish in North Philadelphia. Vince married Eileen O’Neil who graduated from the University in 1982. Their daughters, Brigid ‘05 and Peggy ‘08, are graduates of the University as well as their son, Brendan ‘11. The youngest Reilly, Colin, anticipates his graduation from the University in 2014. Tim Reilly graduated from the University of Delaware in 2009.

 

 

 


Robert E. Reiser, S.J.

Fr. Robert Reiser, S.J., is president of Saint Peter’s Preparatory School in Jersey City, N.J. Previously, he served as assistant to the president at McQuaid Jesuit High School, Rochester, N.Y.; director of vocations for the Society of Jesus, New York, N.Y., and Baltimore, Md.; and director of campus ministry at Canisius High School, Buffalo, N.Y. He served on the faculty at Saint Peter’s Prep from 1990 – 1993.

Fr. Reiser earned a Bachelor of Science from Canisius College, a Master of Arts from Fordham University, a Master of Science from The University of Rochester, a Master of Divinity from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology and a Master of Theology from Harvard Divinity School. He serves on the board of directors of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps: East, Baltimore, Md., and Saint Peter’s College, Jersey City, N.J.

 

 

 


Thomas E. Roach, S.J.

Rev. Thomas E. Roach, S.J., who previously served as secretary for education for the Society of Jesus in Rome, serves as rector of the Jesuit Community at Scranton. 

Fr. Roach delivered the principal address at The University of Scranton’s 2008 Commencement, at which he received an honorary degree from the University.

As secretary for education for the Society of Jesus, Fr. Roach was responsible for helping implement the educational ministry of the Jesuits worldwide. Since 2001, he has been the Superior General’s liaison with the 3,888 Jesuit educational institutions worldwide, serving approximately three million students. 

Fr. Roach served for 25 years in various administrative positions, including principal of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, assistant for secondary education for the Maryland Province, and headmaster and president of Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Md.

He earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from St. Louis University, a Master of Divinity from Woodstock College in Maryland and a Master of Sacred Theology from Woodstock College in New York.

Fr. Roach serves on the Board of Trustees at Scranton Preparatory School and The University of Scranton.

Born in Baltimore, Md., he entered the Society of Jesus in 1957 and was ordained on June 6, 1970.


Kathleen C. Santora, J.D. ‘80

Kathleen Santora, J.D., is the chief executive officer of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, a post she has held since 2001. She previously served as vice president and CEO of the American Association for Higher Education, as well as various positions at Georgetown University, the National Association of Independent College and Universities and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Santora received a Bachelor of Science in political science at The University of Scranton and earned her juris doctorate from the Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America.

 

 

 

 

 


Teresa M. Schafer ‘81

Teresa Schafer has more than 25 years of global experience as chief operating officer and business manager for several major banks and investment banks in London, Tokyo and New York City. Recently, she relocated to northern Virginia, where she is a partner and consulting COO/CFO with a start-up online investment company. Schafer previously worked for Credit Suisse, serving as global COO for equity derivatives and later managing director/COO for North American equities. Schafer has also worked for Bankers Trust, Price Waterhouse and Salomon Brothers. She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from The University of Scranton.

 

 

 

 


Joseph T. Sebastianelli, J.D. ‘68

Joseph Sebastianelli, J.D., is currently president and chief executive officer at Jefferson Health System, Radnor. He previously was chairman president and chief executive officer of Onehealthbank.com and president of ScrippsCare. Sebastianelli is an advisory board member to AEG Capital, LLC and chair of the board of directors for the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP). He graduated from The University of Scranton with a bachelor’s degree in history, and from Villanova University, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree.

 

 

 

 

 

 


Patrick W. Shea, J.D. ‘78

Patrick Shea, J.D., is a partner in the Paul Hastings’ Employment Law Department, representing companies on a wide range of employment-related litigation involving benefits, discrimination, claims and wrongful discharge matters. He is a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, and he was named in The Best Lawyers of America, an annual referral guide published by Best Lawyers, a peer-review publication for the legal profession. Shea is a member of the District of Columbia and Connecticut bar associations and is admitted to a number of federal district and circuit courts. He earned his B.A. degree, with honors, from The University of Scranton. He received his J.D. degree from Yale Law School in 1981.

 

 

 

 

 


Joseph L. Sorbera

Joseph Sorbera is currently president, chief executive officer, and chief operating officer of JLS Industries Inc. and JLS Cost Management Systems Inc., New York, N.Y. He previously served as chief administrative officer for JLS. Sorbera is a member of the board of trustees and the advancement committee for Loyola School and is an executive committee member for the Pride, Passion, Promise Campaign at The University of Scranton. He is a member of the American Society of Cost Estimators, the Building Officials & Code Administrators Organization and the Greater New York Building Trades Association.

 

 

 

 


John A. Walsh ‘66

A native of Scranton, Pa., John Walsh earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from The University of Scranton in 1966 and received a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1968. In 1991, he received the Frank J. O’Hara Award from the University of Scranton’s National Alumni Association, recognizing his “sustained achievement in the communications field.” In 2001, he received the University of Missouri Journalism School Medal of Honor.

Walsh serves as executive vice president and executive editor of ESPN, Inc. Walsh has been the executive editor of ESPN since December 1990. At times during his 22 year career at ESPN, he has overseen the launch of ESPN The Magazine and ESPN Radio; was instrumental in developing the many news and information elements within ESPN; including networks and new shows; and has led the editorial direction of ESPN.com and its properties. Currently he also serves as chairman of ESPN’s editorial board.

Walsh served as the managing editor for ESPN from January 1988 to December 1990, and was responsible for the editorial content of all news and informational programming, including SportsCenter, ESPN’s flagship sports news program.

The founding editor of the original Inside Sports magazine (1979-82), Walsh also served as managing editor of U.S. News and World Report (1985-86) and Rolling Stone (1973-74). He held a number of editorial positions at Newsday (1970-73), including sports editor and op-ed page editor; worked as sports editor of the Columbia Missourian (1967-70), and was an editor at The Washington Post style section (1977-78). He has been the editor of three sports books, including “The Heisman: A Symbol of Excellence,” published in 1984. In addition, he has served as a consultant for several publications, including Esquire magazine (1982-83), Vanity Fair magazine (1983-84), The New York Times Sunday sports “Part Two” magazine (1985) and Special Report magazines published by Whittle Communications.

Walsh had been a consultant to ESPN from July 1987 to January 1988. His television experience includes consultancies to CBS Sports’ NFL Today program (1986-87 season) and with TVTV on a PBS documentary on the 1976 Super Bowl.
