Message from the President and Student Government

Dear Students,

Welcome to the University of Scranton or welcome back.  As we begin a new academic year, your personal journey starts or continues here at this great Catholic and Jesuit University.  This experience will be exciting, challenging and most importantly fulfilling as you enter a new chapter of your own lives.  My hope for you is that you find, or continue to find, this place as welcoming and supportive as I do and you experience the best of what we have to offer.

This University—your University—is a special place.  The people and the mission make it so.  The University is animated by the vision of St. Ignatius and his initial companions.  The Society of Jesus is over 475 years old and continues to educate young men and women in the spirit of Ignatius.  One of the key phrases capturing the charism of Ignatian spirituality is “to love and serve in all things.”  In Ignatius’ Spanish it reads “en todo amar y servir.”  To make this charge your own, I ask you to take time and experience the University fully during your years here.  This is something that you need to do intentionally.  College is a busy time and it is easy to get lost in the day to day minutia.  Ignatius would encourage you to take time each day to reflect on the positive and negative experiences of that day.  Please heed this sage advice.

Our University has a proud tradition of success in place and we expect that you will rise to the challenge and achieve the same types of successes. That may be overwhelming at first but be assured you are ready and you will succeed.  You have special gifts and the University of Scranton will challenge you to develop and use those gifts so that you may as Ignatius hoped, “Go and set the world on fire.”

As we begin this exciting journey together, may God bless us all and may God bless The University of Scranton.

Sincerely,

Kevin P. Quinn, S.J.
President

Dear Fellow Students,

To those in the Class of 2020, welcome! Welcome to the community that will become your second home; welcome to an environment of support and success; welcome to the beginning of the next stage of your lives, where you will form friendships that will last a lifetime. To all those returning, welcome back.

As you will discover, the speed of each successive semester at this amazing university accelerates. It is hard to believe that three years ago we began our journey here at Scranton. What we have discovered in those years has exceeded all our expectations. To the Class of 2020: If you hope that your college experience is one in which you can grow, learn, befriend many, and have the support and love to develop on your own—and in your unique way—you have found a family and home here at Scranton. No other school can equal Scranton when it comes to our faculty, staff, and administrators; whether it’s the commitment to your success held by our faculty; the smiles, warmth, and advice offered by our staff; or the ongoing support and empathy of those who strive to enhance your education and life at the administrative level, you have a home here in Scranton.

We committed last spring to represent you by advocating and advancing your ideas, interests, and rights. Student Government will be available as a resource to you throughout this coming year. Do not hesitate to call or email us, drop by our office, or attend any of our public meetings. Our office is in the DeNaples Forum (205R) and our email is studentgovernment@scranton.edu.  Also, watch for updates on RoyalSync and our webpage scranton.edu/sg.

We look forward to serving you this year, and we hope to meet as many of you as possible. Whether you are new to the community or returning, do not hesitate to stop us when you see us in the dining halls, in the academic buildings, on the commons, or at the gym to introduce yourselves or to ask us questions.

AMDG,
